Deputy Minister Peace Mabe to officially open the 22nd Annual National Oral History Conference in Limpopo
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Deputy Minister Peace Mabe in collaboration with the Limpopo Provincial Government, invites members of the media to the official opening of the 22nd Annual National Oral History Conference 2025.
Hosted through the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA); the Oral History Association of South Africa (OHASA) and the University of Limpopo, the Conference will run from 07–10 October at the Ranch hotel, Polokwane under the theme: “Oral History, Untold Stories and Living Archives: Pursuance of Relentless Struggles for Human Dignity.”
The National Oral History Conference serves as a platform to reflect on, document, and preserve the lived experiences and narratives of historically marginalised communities. Due to the legacy of colonialism and apartheid, South Africa’s public records remain incomplete, particularly regarding African knowledge systems, technologies, philosophies, and lived experiences in areas such as politics, economics, social development, culture, gender, sport, and religion.
Held annually in October, the programme among others seeks to: Preserve both public and non-public records of enduring value; Document the lives and voices of previously disempowered communities; Enrich the country’s archival holdings with first-hand accounts and oral traditions, and to Support integration of indigenous knowledge into formal and informal education systems.
The 2025 edition will bring together scholars, historians, educators, and practitioners from across the country to share insights, methodologies, and best practices in the field of oral history.
THE CONFERENCE WILL UNFOLD AS FOLLOWS:
