Minister McKenzie to Officially Handover the Sport Facility and Monument in Bungeni Village, Limpopo

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie will officially handover the newly completed Bungeni Monument and Multipurpose Sport Facility in Bungeni Village, Limpopo on Friday, 07 March 2025.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Limpopo Provincial Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is proud to announce the delivery of this landmark project, which was made possible through collaborative funding from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), contributions from the private sector, and the support from both these departments.

As part of the MIG programme, the Department through Sports Trust as its implementation partner, implements several infrastructure projects each year, with a particular focus on developing multipurpose sport facilities that foster inclusive participation in sport and recreational activities at community level.

As custodians for the promotion of culture and heritage, the department will also officially open the Chief Bungeni Monument in honour and memorialisation of Chief Bungeni. This comes after the Chief’s gravesite was rehabilitated and unveiled by the department and its partners in December 2023.

These initiatives form part of the Department’s broader strategy to expand access to quality sports infrastructure in underserved communities across South Africa; as well as its vision for the preservation and promotion of our culture and heritage.

Minister McKenzie will be joined by Deputy Minister, Peace Mabe; Chief Given Bungeni; the Sport, Arts and Culture, MEC Funani Jerry Maseko; Vhembe District Municipality Executive Mayor: Cllr Nkondo T.F; Collins Chabane Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Maluleke SG; and the Sports Trust Executive Director, Anita Mathews.
