Our journey of reconciliation is a continuous process that requires effort, dedication and a willingness to engage with our past, present and future. This year South Africa commemorates Reconciliation Month 2024 under the theme: "Healing Historical Wounds and Forging New Futures". This theme underscores the need for inclusive nation building that allows us to acknowledge those who selflessly sacrificed their lives for freedom.
Reconciliation Month is an opportunity to celebrate how far we have come in building a cohesive society and to continue to realise a society founded on non-racialism.
Day of Reconciliation on 16 December is a clarion call for all sectors of society to play an active role in promoting healing in our nation. This year’s commemoration focuses on collective efforts of government and citizens in advancing reconciliation, nation building, social cohesion, healing and forgiveness.
All of us are reminded to acknowledge the progress we have made, while recognising the many challenges that still face us and will still come our way. We should stay committed to overcome our challenges, with true South African grit and determination.
The history and significance of Reconciliation Day are drawn back to the Battle of "Blood River" in 1838, which saw the Voortrekker army led by Andries Pretorius defeat the Zulu army at the Ncome River. During the Apartheid era, 16 December was commemorated as the Day of the Covenant, the Day of the Vow or Dingane’s Day. It was created to commemorate a vow taken by the Voortrekkers in preparation for the battle with the Zulu people under King Dingane kaSenzangakhona.
Post-1994, government created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) with the core mission to uncover truths about severe human rights violations by the brutal apartheid regime. It was a platform for the voices of the victims and perpetrators to be heard on acts of injustice committed during apartheid.
Let us build on the lessons learned from the TRC and continue the work on forgiveness, reconciliation and healing to safeguard our hard-fought democracy for future generations.
Reconciliation Month commemoration takes place three months after we received 35 human remains of South Africans who were buried while in exile in Zimbabwe and Zambia. The next phase of the project will focus on the repatriation of the remains of South Africans buried in Angola
This initiative is crucial for national healing, allowing families to find closure and honour the memory of those who fought for freedom and justice. Moreover, this project is part of our commitment to honour and restore the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives for the country's freedom.
Forging a new future for everyone requires us to protect the gains of our democracy while ensuring that we all enjoy human dignity and the progressive realisation of socio-economic rights. Our past makes us who we are, but do not have to define us. Together we can reimagine a healed nation united in our diversity.
Over the past 30 years, our nation has indeed made significant strides in promoting democracy,
equality and justice. We can stand proud, though, that we have established a robust constitutional framework, expanded access to education and healthcare, and promoted economic growth and development. The task before us is now in improving the quality of this access and ensuring that we
benefit all those who need it most.
Let us therefore continue to work together to promote reconciliation, nation-building and social cohesion. Let us celebrate our achievements, learn from our challenges, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more
just, equitable and prosperous South Africa for all.
