Robben Island Museum Vessels Safe for Tourists
19 May 2025
In light of the recent media reports that suggest that Robben Island Museum (RIM) vessels were non-compliant and endangering the safety of visitors; the reports in question are inaccurate and misleading, as operating a vessel that does not comply with the law is prohibited. The allegations are malicious and germinate from a disgruntled employee who is facing a disciplinary hearing for serious allegations, following a whistle blow. RIM’s vessels have consistently operated at optimal levels, ensuring the safety of visitors and staff members. RIM would like to guarantee that the vessels that transport visitors to the island are certified and compliant in accordance with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).
The current certification is valid until 20 May 2025 and was issued on 24 May 2024 by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) Consequently, Krotoa will be undergoing certification of various lifesaving equipment in preparation for the Local General Safety Certificate (LGSC) (SAMSA Safety Certificate) which is renewed through this scheduled, mandatory survey. This survey is done annually during the month of May and RIM vessels including Krotoa have been undergoing this survey to ensure compliance and safety of the vessels. Additionally, the Krotoa will dry dock in June as part of scheduled maintenance on the hull that is done annually as well. Over and above these measures RIMs qualified engineers conduct daily inspections of the vessels before the vessel could ferry the passengers to the island. This is in the best interest of the public and our esteemed guests. As of quarter one (1 April) of the current financial year to date Krotoa has done 103 scheduled trips without encountering any technical problems.
RIM is committed to the safety of all our visitors and the optimal operation of our vessels in accordance with the regulations of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). Therefore, we treat the routine maintenance of our vessels seriously. RIM is dedicated to providing a secure and comfortable environment for the public and visitors, while simultaneously imparting the global community about South Africa's multifaceted history, which spans from oppression to liberation.
