The Market Theatre Foundation (MTF) is one of South Africa's leading cultural institutions, renowned for advancing artistic excellence, social dialogue, and creative development through the performing and visual arts. Established in 1976 and based in Johannesburg's historic Newtown Precinct, the Foundation gained international recognition during the apartheid era as a powerful platform for non-racial, socially conscious theatre. It was officially declared a Cultural Institution in 2005. 

MTF is home to four artistic units, namely: 

The Market Theatre – An internationally renowned theatre known for its resistance against apartheid and continued bold engagement with social issues. For 50 years, The Market Theatre has been a proud home to the South African story in its complexities. 

The Market Theatre Laboratory – A training and development centre nurturing the next generation of theatre-makers.

The Market Photo Workshop – A leading institution for photography education, public engagement, visual storytelling and photojournalism. 

The Windybrow Arts Centre – A community-focused arts centre situated in the heart of the Johannesburg inner-city, impacting communities through artistic and literacy programmes.

  The legislative mandate of The Market Theatre Foundation is derived from the Cultural Institutions Act, 1998 (Act 119 of 1998).
