Countdown Rush to enter Region 5 Marathon - R50 000 Purse for 21.1km Winners
Tshwane, South Africa - The countdown is on to the Region 5 Marathon, set for Sunday, 12 October 2025 at the iconic Union Buildings in Tshwane.
With less than two weeks to go, organisers are urging athletes and fitness enthusiasts not to miss out on this prestigious event that offers one of the most attractive prize purses in the region.
The 21.1km winners (men and women) will each claim R50 000, while second and third placed will take home R20 000 and R10 000, respectively. The 10km race also carries weighty rewards, with R15 000 for each winner, R7 000 for second placed, and R6 000 for third. Additional prize money across veterans, masters, and grandmasters ensures a wide spread of recognition.
Alongside the flagship 21.1km and 10km, the programme includes the official 5km race and a 5km fun run, as well as the 1-mile (1.6km) event for athletes with disabilities, and each carrying competitive prizemoney. Adding to this year’s excitement, the event will be bolstered by the popular Big Walk, which is expected to attract an additional 10 000 participants, bringing a festive spirit and transforming Tshwane into a hub of mass participation. While the Big Walk is designed to bring families and communities together, the Region 5 Marathon remains the centrepiece, showcasing elite and recreational runners alike.
Race Director Enoch Skosana said: “We are now at the final stretch of preparations, and our message is clear: secure your entry now before the 5 October closing date. Race pack collection will be hosted at the CT Hotel in Arcadia, opposite the Union Buildings, to make it convenient for all athletes.
"We have put the participant's welfare at the forefront, led by law enforcement, traffic officials and medical services to ensure every runner, walker and spectator is safe along the routes. Security will be tight on and off the road, with medical points strategically placed for immediate support.
"This marathon is a flagship event for our southern region, and we cannot afford to see it fall short of its potential. We are appealing to athletes, clubs and federations across southern Africa to act now and register online before the October 5 deadline.
“So, to achieve the target of runners, it will take a collective effort by all countries. Each registration strengthens the event, inspires others to join and ensures that our region continues to host races of international calibre.
“We also emphasise that entry fees have been kept deliberately affordable to remove barriers to participation. Whether you are an elite athlete, a developing runner or a recreational participant, this event is priced with inclusion in mind. Every category, from the half marathon to the shorter races, has been structured to make it easy for individuals and teams to take part.
“To add to that, the prizemoney offered in each race is truly tantalising. Athletes stand to gain not only the pride of representing their countries and clubs, but also meaningful financial rewards. We urge runners and athletics bodies to take advantage of this opportunity while registration is still open. Let us rally together, fill the start line and make this edition one of the most successful in Region 5 history.”
